Simena

Simena

The village of Kalekoy(Simena) was established on top of the ancient city of Simena. Here, ancient history and modern day life are intertwined. From the inscriptions that have been found we know that the history of the ancient city of Simena goes back to the 4th century B.C. At the top of the village is the castle of Simena which was used during the Middle Ages. High up, just below the castle wall, stood a temple, but all that remains of it now are a few blocs built into a late wall and a fragment of an inscription bearing the name of Callippus.

Inside the castle is a charming little rock-cut theatre; it only has seven rows of seats and measures a mere 16 meters in diameter. It couldn't have held much more than 300 people, a fair indication of the small size of the city. There are also some tombs scattered about the west side of the theater. Above the rock tombs is a Roman wall built in stone with inscriptions on it, and on the shore are the ruins of public baths whose inscriptions are also still legible.
